Most of us follow the common trend of engineering and medicine. Do we really want to take up these mainstream subjects or is the constant nagging of our parents saying, “mera beta engineer banega” or “meri beti doctor banegi” force us to do that? We eventually give in to their wishes or try and make a compromise that would keep both the parties happy. After all someone has to pay for our fees.
‘Pass toh ho gaye, lekin ab kya?!’ A dreadful question that gave me sleepless nights! Till now, life had followed a standard path, and there was no need to take major decisions. Parents were always there even for the minutest of the choices, but this time I had made up my mind, that it had to be my decision.
I tried asking my parents and relatives for advice but the results weren’t very satisfying. Reading and googling didn’t help either. It gave me so many junk options, which weren’t viable for me. End result - More depressed. I was neither happy with the subjects I chose nor were my parents happy with my marks! Am I incapable or poor in studies? Or I am just not meant for this field? These were certain questions that occurred to me very often. It always made me think where did I go wrong?
So, I set up on my own journey of career discovery. I just started meeting as many people as I could from different professions and started asking them general questions about what they do. Fortunately, I had an elder sister, who was a sounding board to my experiment. I followed the law of elimination, hoping that I could arrive at my dream career. And I believe, I did, I ended up pursuing science as I was always interested in understanding ‘why’ things happen.
Although, I got ended up in a stream of my choice, I thought I should do something to make this choice simpler for the next generation. This is when I came across Get Set Sorted, which offers a high impact one stop solution for career guidance. Basically, they provide the career discovery model I followed, in a single online platform.
I’m sure there would be many students like me, who suffer from such similar problems. We are constantly bombarded with questions like, “What do you want to become? Have you decided what stream you have to choose after 10th/ 12th? Which college do you want to go?” If you are in the same boat, it is advisable to get career guidance from an organization like Get Set Sorted. Don’t let these questions over burden you. Be Happy, sail on your journey and this is your CHOICE!
